Abstract:

Grapes are significant sources of nutritional antioxidants as well as biologically active dietary components. This study was carried out to determine the amount of total phenols, anthocyanins and antioxidant activity of 35 grapevine (Vitis vinifera L.) cultivars grown in Fars province (Iran). Ripened bunches were randomly harvested from grapevine collection in Zarghan (Fars province, Iran) Agricultural Research Center, and then were transferred to the laboratory. Berry size (length, diameter, and weight), skin weight, acidity, vitamin C, total soluble solids (TSS), pH, phenols, anthocyanins and antioxidant activity were evaluated. The results showed that total phenols, anthocyanin and antioxidant activity in the berries varied among the investigated cultivars. ‘Gandome Uromia’ (Red, 64) and ‘Rishbaba Uromia’ (Red, 75) cultivars had the highest values of antioxidant activity and total phenols. The lowest amount of phenol was obtained from ‘Divaneh Kashmar’ (White, 135) cultivar. Anthocyanin and antioxidant activity were the lowest in ‘Jeshnion Bavanat’ (White, 105) cultivar. Antioxidant activity had a positive significant correlation with amount of phenols and anthocyanin. In general, it was found that different cultivars in this study had a vast range of antioxidant activity from 14.55 to 66.47%.

Chloroplast genome diversity in Portuguese grapevine (Vitis vinifera L.) cultivars.

Grapevine chloroplast (cp) DNA diversity was analysed for the first time through amplification and digestion of fragments of the large single copy (LSC) region by polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism methodology and also by amplification of three microsatellite loci, previously described as polymorphic in grapevine. Thirty-eight grapevine cultivars collected mainly...

Phenolic profile and antioxidant activity of different raisin (Vitis vinifera L.) samples

In the last years, the interest in non-alcoholic grape products, aa potential alternative sources of phenolic compounds, has considerably increased. Raisins are dried grapes largely consumed in the Mediterranean area for the positive pattern of nutrients, and for recent data describing potential benefits on human health. Among the health-promoting substances contained in raisins, flavonoids see...

Antioxidant Activity and Total Phenolic Content of Nerium oleander L. Grown in North of Iran

In this study, we have examined the antioxidant activity and total phenolic content of different extracts (including water, methanol, water : methanol and acetone) of Nerium oleander L. grown in the north of Iran by employing various in-vitro assay, i.e. DPPH free radical scavenging, reducing power and total antioxidant capacity through the Mo (VI) reduction. The extracts showed different level...

Distinctive anthocyanin accumulation responses to temperature and natural UV radiation of two field-grown (Vitis vinifera L.) cultivars.

The responses of two red grape varieties, Bovale Grande (syn. Carignan) and Cannonau (syn. Grenache), to temperature and natural UV radiation were studied in a three-years field experiment conducted in Sardinia (Italy), under Mediterranean climate conditions. Vines were covered with plastic films with different transmittances to UV radiation and compared to uncovered controls. Light intensity a...
